One of our first projects was to help raise awareness of the quality and range of craft and jewellery products being designed and manufactured on the islands. We felt that this could best be achieved by highlighting the location of craft workshops throughout the mainland of Orkney initially and encouraging both visitors to Orkney and local people to visit these businesses to find out just how some of our quality products - pottery, jewellery, silverware, knitwear, etc - were produced and to find out more about the craftspeople, their businesses and their inspiration.
Working closely with Orkney Craft Industries Association, we established the Orkney Craft Trail which included the design and production of an informative booklet which details all members of the trail, opening hours, accessibility, range of products, prices, and most importantly, directions to their workshop. To help the visitor on the road, we also arranged for roadsigns to be in place at and close to each producer location.
The craft trail has grown since the early days and participating workshops can now be found in the islands as well as on the mainland. The trail provides an exciting insight into the world of designing, manufacturing and selling world-class products from an island location.
OTHER DEVELOPMENTS
We also helped the islands of Westray and Papa Westray to establish their own 'Craft and Heritage Trail' so if you are travelling to these islands be sure to explore this local attraction.
And we worked closely with Orkney's artists who now have an 'artists' register' which is widely available and will let you know when and where you can visit artists' workshops to see the plethora of quality artwork emanating from these islands.
