Although this is listed as a past project, it is in fact ongoing. It was started in 2001 with the objective of re-developing the sport fishing industry in the waters around the Orkney Islands where a number of records for sought after species are held. These include halibut, giant common skate and other challenging species. One of the UK's top fishing consultants was engaged to carry out a series of surveys to determine the best marks for specific species, by boat as well as from the shore and the first round of these surveys was completed in 2005 with the landing and release of a giant common skate weighing in at 120 lbs !!
A small number of local boatmen with excellent boats were enlisted to the project at the outset and a website was set up by a specialist angling website designer at www.seaanglingorkney.com
The project is now approaching its second phase with a number of new objectives but the sport has been revived and enquiries are coming in from sport fishermen wanting to explore these "new" fishing grounds so the project has achieved its original objectives of broadening the attraction of Orkney to a wider range of visitors.
